4 Key Considerations For Koi Ponds

Koi PondKoi ponds add a level of other-worldly beauty layered with elements of unique water-garden creativity. They can be installed in a weekend and add a depth to any landscape that leaves a permanent impression. Having an area of meditative retreat can open an oasis feeling into your private space.

Pond Design Elements

It takes about 2,000 gallons of water to adequately host up to 15 good sized Koi. Well-designed ponds can transport one into an oasis of tropical feelings and flowers. Location makes a big difference when considering issues such as maintenance.

Too many trees above your pond cause a collection of leaves or needles that can overwhelm. They also clog your filtration system. Shade is important for both your pond and fish health. Finding the balance will reap great reward. Your water pump should provide a two hour water turnover rate for best results.

Koi Pond Predator Planning

For the most dynamic and successful ponds, depths should be enough to prevent racoons from fishing for your new pets. Four feet deep and at least four feet wide make it almost impossible for creatures of the night to feast on them.

Netting to prevent fishing by Great Blue Herons is also advisable for shallower ponds. For Herons the safest depth is eight inches. These gorgeous birds will polish off every last fish in a single night.

Location is also important. Will you view your pond from bedroom windows, or from the kitchen? Try using a garden hose to display the area for your pond so you can check your viewing options.

Planning for a Healthy Ecology

Pond plants can give the shade required if chosen carefully. Many lotus flowers and other larger more tropical plants stand high and bloom voraciously during their seasons. Tall standing plants also add an interesting texture.

Color attracts users to the pond and can also attract colorful birds. Your fish will also need cool shady areas for languishing. Your plants will absorb nitrates and assist with the filtration. Making sturdy, colorful border edges of plants prevents animals and people from getting too close to the edge.

Waterfalls designed using natural stone generate aeration and oxygen into the water, keeping it clean and fresh for the fish and other inhabitants. Your pump and filtration system need to be adequately sized for your water volume as well.

Many choose ultra violet sterilizers to help with clean water maintenance. Heating systems are needed in areas that freeze in winter. If your pond is located in full sunlight, you will need a shade arbor.

Koi Pond Size

The larger the pond, the more maintenance is potentially required. A well designed pond take about an hour of maintenance a week to change and clean filters, check the water acidity feed the fish and attend to any other issues. Small ponds hold about 1,000 gallons of water, large ponds up to 2500. Larger ponds allow for adequate fish growth and populations that self-maintain.

Koi grow from six to eight inches within one year, they can grow to 36 inches within seven to ten years. They live about 20 years. With high-quality living environments, and room for growth, they have been known to last up to 40 years.

There are optimum designs that shape and support good water flow, debris drainage and water health such as well-rounded ovals. Consult with your landscaping maintenance specialist at Green Impressions for ideas that work for your location.

Texture and Appearance

Your Koi pond adds resale value to your home. Most choose from concrete and often add stone veneer. Others will use rubber pond liners that are less permanent and can be moved if necessary.
